TikTok Taps into Top Spot as 2024’s Most Popular App

After analysing the data across all genres of apps, TikTok came out on top with a staggering 823,538,181 downloads.

This may come to no surprise to many, with the social media app considerably rising in popularity over the last few years. The Chinese-owned app has taken over in the industry.

TikTok has dominated the market in 2024, but Instagram has also had their fair share of downloads too, coming in at a close second.

It’s also worth noting that there are more social apps on the list than any other genre, with seven of the top ten used as social media platforms.

TikTok Claims the Top Spot Among Top 10 Entertainment Apps

Once again dominating, TikTok heads the top ten entertainment apps list, with almost three times as many downloads as the second most popular app, Spotify.

  • TikTok Downloads – 823,538,181
  • Spotify Downloads – 237,933,835

American-made apps have become prominent in the market once again in 2024, with five out of the ten in the list hailing from there (YouTube, Netflix, YouTube Kids, Amazon Prime Video, Max)

The rest of the apps in the list come from a range of countries including China (TikTok, 快手), Singapore (Drama Box), Sweden (Spotify) and India (JioCinema)

Social Media Showdown: Instagram Reigns Supreme

Instagram is on the up, and they topped the social apps list with 818,514,775 downloads in 2024.

Meta has been a force to be reckoned with in the social media world during recent years, crowding the social list with apps such as Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Temu’s Rise to the Top: A New Era in Mobile Shopping

Chinese mobile shopping app Temu has seen a meteoric rise in 2024, with 534,322,681 downloads. They have just less than double the amount as the second on the list, SHEIN with 227,408,645.

Interestingly, they have had more than triple the amount of downloads than Amazon who have been the most popular rapid-shipping online shop over the past 5-10 years.

  • Temu Downloads – 534,322,681
  • Amazon Downloads – 153,440,850

Furthermore, another surprising outcome is Alibaba Mobile-owned apps Aliexpress and Alibaba have had more downloads than leading sports brands Nike and Adidas..

Gaming’s Champion: Roblox Tops The Charts

Roblox was the most popular gaming app of 2024, only just topping the list with 195,097,728 downloads.

The gaming list was highly competitive, and Block Blast was the second most downloaded, but only just with 186,559,361. But things can only get better for Block Blast in 2025, with the game achieving significant downloads despite only being created in 2023.

Roblox (2006), Subway Surfers (2012) and 8 Ball Pool (2010) are all relatively old games, but still continue to be prominent in the gaming scene today. New initiatives and regular updates have allowed them to clearly thrive.

Duolingo Dominates The Digital Classroom

Learning new languages is a skill to be desired by many, and Duolingo has helped millions just do that.

It leads the ‘digital classroom’ with 158,475,775 downloads, with over triple the amount of the next in the list, Seekho: Short Learning Videos (50,828,076).

However, with AI becoming more and more popular over the past 12 months, it could take over in the online learning world. Three AI apps entered calculations in the list, check them out below.

Commentary

Liam Solomon, spokesperson of CasinoApps spoke on the findings: “TikTok has become one of the most talked about platforms in the world in recent years, and the data shows that. With 823,538,181 downloads, those numbers are only expected to get bigger. TikTok can be used for so many different things so there is no surprise to see the figures dominate.”
